Opening Your Pool

The end of cold weather spells the beginning of pool time for you and your family. Starting up your pool is a quick and simple process.

By following a short list of startup measures, you’ll ensure your pool is swim ready when you are; but, make sure you contact your local pool professional for additional information regarding pools in your specific geographical location.

  • If the pool is covered, you will need to remove debris and water from the cover. Use a quality cover cleaner to clean, deodorize and protect the cover. Then store it in a dry, cool place.
  • Use your leaf-cleaner to remove leaves and other debris from the bottom of your pool. Empty the skimmer and pump strainer baskets.
  • Fill your pool to the recommended level. This is usually halfway up the skimmer.
  • Inspect all equipment including pump, filter, heater, diving board, ladders and chlorinator for proper installation and operation.
  • Take a sample of your pool water to your authorized dealer for a complete analysis. Then, follow the provided instructions for balancing your pool water.
  • Remove organic waste by shocking the pool.
  • Prevent algae by adding an initial dose of an algaecide.
  • To sanitize your pool, use a stabilizer such as chlorinated tablets in a floater, skimmer or automatic chlorinator.
  • Run the filter system for at least two hours. During this time, brush the walls and vacuum the pool bottom.

(Note: The surface of a newly plastered pool should harden for a period of several weeks before being brushed or vacuumed.)
